Rama VIII Bridge Bangkok

It is the 13th Bridge that crosses over the Chao Phraya River, This bridge was build from the idea of H.M.KING BHUMIBOL ADULYADEJ, King rama IX presented to the Bangkok metropolitan administration in 1995 That an additional bridge crossing over the Chao phraya river should be built to support the increasing of traffic which was generate from the parallel Borommaratchachonnani road,and also to support more transportations between Bangkok side and Thon buri side.

The Construction was started in 1998 and took 24 months to complete, the total amount of budget utilized in designing and constructing of the bridge is amounted to 3,170 millions bath.

The bridge has a length of 475 metres, the main length crossing over the Chao Phraya River is 300 metres, the length on the land is 100 metres, and the length close to the foundation of the pillar is 75 metres.

The bridge is desinged in the Unbalanced style, which means that there is actually only main pillar on Thon Buri side and another one pillar supporting the weight in bangkok’s side, therefore there are no pillars at all in the Chao Phraya River.

The main pillar is made of reinforced concrete, and its’s function is to carry the other parts of the bridge. It is designed and follows the framework of a mental vision of Ruean Kaeo(Glass House).

The barriers of the bridge and all of the structures under the bridge utilizing from the very lightweight materials, It has characteristics that to reflect the light down to the road and the river under the bridge, and also makes the areas to be brighter thereby enabling to save electricity at night as well, H.M.KING BHUMIBOL ADULYADEJ graciously named the bridge as RAMA VII BRIDGE for a royal memorial celebrated to H.M. KING ANANDA MAHIDOL,king Rama VIII.
